Introduction by Sean Murphy, Editor and Executive Director, 1455
Having completed a series of successful contests featuring young poets as part of 1455’s annual Summer Fest, I realized two things. First, we attracted more diversity and talent each cycle, and second, choosing grand prize winners became more difficult. The solution, it seemed, was at once simple and challenging: publish more young writers.
For the inaugural 1455 Young Poets Anthology, we invited writers ages 10 to 21 from around the world to explore a question that has shaped poets for generations: What does hope mean today? In a world often defined by uncertainty and noise, these young writers responded with remarkable honesty, imagination, and courage. The poems gathered here reveal a generation deeply aware of the challenges facing our world—but equally determined to imagine something better. Some poets search for hope in quiet moments of family, friendship, and nature; others confront injustice and doubt while refusing to surrender the possibility of change. What unites them is the belief that poetry still matters—that language, when used with care and conviction, can illuminate possibilities we might not otherwise see.
Emily Dickinson famously wrote that “Hope is the thing with feathers.” The poets in this collection suggest that hope can take many forms: a question, a protest, a memory, a promise. Their voices remind us that poetry is not simply a reflection of the world as it is, but an act of imagination about the world as it might become.
What emerges from these pages is not simply a collection of poems, but a conversation between voices from around the world—voices asking questions, challenging assumptions, and imagining possibilities. They remind us that hope is not something we passively wait for—it is something we imagine, question, and create together. In that sense, every poem in this book is more than an expression. It is an act of possibility. These poets prove the future is already a work in progress.

The 1455 Young Poets Anthology was created to celebrate the voices of emerging poets from around the world.
